We, as humans, are sensory beings. Since the dawn of mankind, our senses of touch and sight have contributed to our knowledge of the world around us, evoking emotions such as joy, fear, love and curiosity to name a few. As designers, we are charged with the task of bringing out the best of those emotions in the environments we create. Color and Design Trends by Dura Supreme Cabinetry is here to help you!
Of all of the various elements of design used in creating spaces, one of the most impactful elements is that of texture. Texture tends to bring about a more emotional response (think furry rug, silk sheets, bomber leather, rough stone). It is the element that can pull a room in a certain direction sometimes more than any other element, making a space a cozy lodge, a luxe bedroom or a contemporary kitchen.
In the world of cabinetry, we are seeing the element of texture rising in popularity. Woods with more character, live edges, weathered finishes, knots and grain are being specified more often. When incorporating texture, a designer needs to be mindful, as more is not always better. One does not want to create a sensory overload; it is best in measured doses, thoughtfully integrated into the design.
Color and Design Trends:
GRAY FINISHES CONTINUE POPULARITY
For interior design, including kitchens and baths, Gray as a dominant color scheme continues to rise in popularity. It is a calm and soothing neutral back-drop for all areas of the home and works beautifully with all colors!
SHADES OF WHITE PART 1: COOL WHITES
Painted white cabinetry has a timeless look and feel. Using white opens up so many options when it comes to pulling together a beautiful palette for a room. Do you opt for all white, a mix of shades of white, or white with pops of color?
A COLOR PALETTE INSPIRED BY NATURE
With true brown stains trending in cabinetry finishes, Dura Supreme recently introduced several new stains with decidedly brown undertones that pair beautifully with so many colors. One of the lighter stains introduced into the palette is Toast, light enough to enhance the wood grain, yet rich and warm without being overly dramatic.
NAVY BLUE COLOR TRENDING
Navy Blue has slowly become a popular color for interior design and kitchens, and is one of those colors that will be classic and timeless for the long term. Paired with a white or gray paint, along with a medium brown stain color like Dura Supreme’s “Toast” or “Cappuccino”, Navy Blue is destined to be a popular theme in home interiors!
GRAY: CLASSIC AND TIMELESS
Designers are often asked about gray and whether or not gray color schemes in interior design (and for kitchen cabinetry) are a passing fad or a long term trend.
STAIN COLORS TREND TOWARD BROWN
Like fashion, trends in interior design shift over the years. Although with interior design and its significant investment, “classic and timeless” design is often at the forefront of decisions.
Color is a highly personal preference for most people and although there are certainly specific colors considered “on-trend” or “fashionable”, color choices should ultimately be based on what appeals to you personally. As a designer, I am often asked about color trends and how to incorporate them into a newly designed or renovated interior. And although trends and fashion should be taken into consideration, it should not be THE only deciding factor.
